How to Prepare for JAMB in 2021
Utme has been a challenge to many student in the nation as a whole, because passing utme is not an easy task for the fact that it is cbt and many student are not used to it ,that’s why i decided to come up with the topic how to prepare for jamb in 2021.
Hardly anyone who perform well in UTME escape without putting together these three things that will be mentioned below. It excludes those that choose examination malpractice as their way of getting through the challenge posed by utme . As for doing of exam malpractice, these are usually regretted in the future. At the end, it is better to work hard and reap the results of hard labour.
Let us discuss easy steps you can use to prepare yourself adequately for JAMB. It is easier said than done. In practice, they are very difficult but are the steps that every outstanding student has practiced so as to overcome the utme challenge. In fact, thesey steps are all what you needed to murder JAMB. So, let’s go!
- STEP 1: CREATE A GOAL ,DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT IN YOUR RESULT AND WORK TOWARDS IT
Make sure you find out the MINIMUM score you need in JAMB with your subject combination to get admitted in your desired course of the your preffered institution.
Minimum score can be gotten from the minimum cut-off mark for JAMB that will qualify each student for post-UTME for that course and in their desired institution. The score you want must also take into account the departmental cut-off marks given by your preffered institution that will qualify you for admission by merit. As you’re reading this now, go out and make your research and know that minimum score in your cerebral. This will help you to work the towards the minimum mark.
After you might have done the procedure up there, the immediate thing is to decide on that result you wish to get so as to get your desired course. The score you need must be different from the one you need to gain admission, actually it need to be higher. The problem for many students is that they don’t even know the score they need talk less of the score they should want to work towards while preparing for UTME. This is where most fail the number one rule of high-level achievement which is first setting a clear goal, a building can not stand without foundation this first step is the foundation of getting higher scores in jamb
These kind of students after writing UTME then they begin to make their research which is suppose to made before the exam after which they now start praying to God to give them that score. God is not a magician ,he does miracle . Some students still do not even find out the needed score or cut-off mark until their result is out. It is understandable that sometimes JAMB body and various institutions change their cut-off marks annually perhaps, depending on the general performance of students but you can always make a good assumption to work with from previous cut-off marks.
Setting a higher target is a principle in line with the saying that goes: “you should shoot for the stars, for you never know, you may land on the moon”. When you aim for a reasonable target (what i mean by reasonable is achievable; some students set targets of ‘390,400’ which is quite impossible), you’ll have to work extraordinarily to get that kind of target.
A target above 290 is good enough to spur you to action. Once you have fixed your desired score, assume the score you want to have in each of your four subjects according to your strengths. See an example below;
My Target Score For JAMB: 311
Use of English: 75
Step 2: Have a study plan and reading time table.
It is one task to set a target and it’s another challenge to map out a plan to use and reach it. I will get 311 in JAMB is easier said than done. A study plan is therefore an organized schedule that a student creates that outlines study time and learning goals. Having a study plan and a reading time table not only helps you become more organized, but it holds you accountable for your own learning outcomes and the achievement of your goal or target.
Every student will create a different study plan; there is no fixed study plan for everyone. When creating your study plan, you will need to do some self-evaluation of your current schedule and time management. Find days when you have fewer personal commitments when you can squeeze more study time – while doing this, remember that you need to put in as much time as you desire to see results.
Remember, we studies differently, so the amount of time you need to study will differ from the time i devote to studying. Also, some students find that studying at night or at early hours of the morning is better for them than during the day. Work according to your biological rhythm. What matters is consistency! It is the key.
Have a focus on why you are studying – which is to reach a JAMB score target – and create a plan that can help you achieve your goal. Take into consideration previous performances (that is if you have written JAMB before) and how you prepared in those occasions. You need to also anticipate subjects that will take more time to prepare for than the others.
Lastly, create a study plan that is reasonable(achievable). Although you must set aside enough time in your schedule dedicated to your studies, for rest. You can spend less time studying if you do it in a right way. For a detailed look at how to make a study plan, explore the step-by-step instructions for creating your study plan below:
1. Develop a time chart of your current activities:
Developing a time chart will allow you to see how you spend your time from day to day, hours to hours, minutes to minutes. Take notes about your day-in-day-out activities. Record things like when you wake up, sleep, do chores, work, go out and if you’re in school, how much time you spend in school daily.
Once you have done this, check for free time available for studying and it should be up to at least five hours especially as UTME is fast approaching, if not you will need to re-organize your daily activities and create more time for studying. If you need to eliminate some activities.
2. Develop a schedule and reading time table:
Now that you have gotten available days and times for your study, the next thing is to create a schedule. It is good to have a schedule written down so you won’t forget it. Seeing it written down can make it seem more important especially in a wall in your room .
You need to know subjects that will require more time to study(your weak subject). Your schedule and your reading time table will depend highly on the amount of time you have left. If you are reading this and you have maybe three months left, then maybe you will need to put in more than seven hours daily for work. Please be sincere with yourself here and put in as much time as necessary.
One hour a day will lead you nowhere. Let your plan be very definite and efficient ; for example, if you have 20 chapters of a textbook to study and 10 years of JAMB past questions to solve and you need to finish it in 20 days, then you may need to read one chapter in a day and solve 1 year of past questions every two days. Remember to have breaks in between long hours of study in order to avoid brain-block.
3. Stick to your study plan:
A study plan works the best if there is consistency. Some days may not go according to plan but it should always be for a tangible reasons that the situation of the day warrant . Otherwise, you need to be disciplined enough and constantly remind yourself that your future and the future of others depending on you or that will depend on you in the future are at stake.
Again, stick to your plan. You can use incentives such as eating after you’ve been able to read for three hours without getting up from your chair (make sure you don’t read while starving; it hardly works). You may also need to deprive yourself of some sleep at night because you can easily regain lost sleep after JAMB (don’t overdo this one because sleep is also very vital).
Lastly, some students find study easier with a study partner. Studying with a associates also preparing for UTME allows collaboration and discussion in your reading which aid retentiveness. When developing your study plan, check what other friends have to determine if you can actually coordinate study sessions. However, if you tend be talkative person among your firends more than study, stick to your personalized study plan. If you eventually want to study with a partner, choose someone who knows more than you do.
- Step3: Start your reading now,It’s easy.
If you’re in lower class be it SS 1 or SS 2 and you are reading this published post now, then consider yourself very fortunate. It is advisable that you develop a plan, even if it is an hour in a day for JAMB and start as early as possible. If you follow all the process, you will be excited when others are breaking their heads trying to prepare in a month to the UTME exam.
If you are one month away from the UTME exam, don’t be paranoid because you still have a good chance of getting what you want. However, you must begin your reading now with a good schedule plan as we have described in step two up there. If you have just some weeks left to exam, then what you need at this very moment to focus on going through as many past questions as you can and revise for your exam with exam-focus textbooks. The main point here is to start reading this very moment. Don’t procrastinate!Procrastinating is a thief of time
- Step 4: Go through at least twenty recent years of past questions to get patterns
To study efficiently, you need to know the patterns that is being used by JAMB body to set questions. Firstly, we both know that UTME questions are usually Mcqs and the way you read for mcqs type questions is not the same way you read for theory or subjective type.
Even though it’s easier to prepare for mcqs than the others because you can always easily predict the answer from the given options, yet you still need to know the common patterns being used to set their questions. For example, if for the past twenty or less years, they have set more of questions involving calculation than theory in a subject like Physics or Mathematics, this will give you a clue to chose where to direct your attention .
From some computer analysis of past questions, it has been discovered that in Mathematics, questions on geometry, trigonometry, statistics, matrices and differentiation, and general mathematics occur more often. Also in English Language, questions on lexis and structure and concord top the list. In Chemistry, questions on organic compounds and general chemistry tend dominate. More top topics like this can be known for other subjects when you study the past questions.
- Step 5: Practice with exam focus textbooks to study according to the syllabus
Why will you not use syllabus in the first place?I will say you have craze in your for not using syllabus,
This step is also very crucial to take note of because many students study endlessly. Some students give useless excuses such as: “JAMB syllabus is too much to comprehend, I’m not sure they will set everything”, but that’s far from truth. Every exam has a focus just like utme; there are always things the examiners expect and assume that if you know, then you must know some other things related to it. For example, if you know how to play ball, then you must at least know how to dribble.
An examiner then just needs to test you to describe how football is played he has asked a number of questions all together in one. After all, it’s just forty questions they give you per subject apart from English language where they give you sixty questions. Pratcticing with exam focus textbooks study with your results from the research on the patterns they have used in past questions according to the JAMB syllabus. That is the rule in one sentence, Perfectly Said!!
- Step 6: Solve at least twenty years of past questions yourself at least twice.
This will require time but if you can do this after studying according to their syllabus even more than twice, you can never regret it, trust me. Remember, as i have been said earlier, your study plan is directly proportional on how much time you have left to the examination and how much time you are willing to give on each of those remaining days to adequate study. JAMB has been conducting this examination since the 1974 and they should have run out of questions by now; all they have is question bank what they can do is to keep twisting and modifying past questions to make them look new.
The problem with many candidates is that they study about five recent years of past questions and they are satisfied. You hold the key to success in your own hands. Use a credible past questions for this and try to do your research using your textbooks on the questions you are not sure about. Always try to make sure you understand the answers to the questions.
- Step 7: Practice at least one timed Cbt test daily when it is three weeks to the exam.
What i mean by a Cbt timed test is a test that is to the real JAMB exam in which you will give yourself the amount of time JAMB gives which is 2hrs or less if you need to work on your speed and accuracy. At least when it is three weeks to the exam (if possible more than that), start practicing these timed CBT tests after which you will see your score and assess your performance. This is where a JAMB CBT practice platform or application will be helpful. This will help you work on your speed and accuracy before the real exam comes.
Pick a preceeding year and solve the JAMB past questions for that year for your four subjects based on your JAMB subject combination according to a time limit similar to the 2hrs that JAMB gives in the UTME.
- Step 8: Be mentally stable before the main exam comes.
People usually overlook this steps especially if they are very practical people because it sound weird and fairy-tale-like. But playing the scene of the exam in your mind, seeing yourself going into the exam center confident and well-prepared as well as seeing yourself coming out happy and satisfied with how well you answered the questions helps you to confidant of yourself and deal with tension that comes with the exam.
On each occasion you must do this not only in UTME exam, the best method is to find a silent place, most likely a place you can stay in a lying position without dozing off. Close your eyes and begin to act the whole experience the way you want on the exam day from entering the exam center to collecting the papers, writing the exams and leaving the center after the exams. Play it in your mind while taking slow deep breaths until you begin to feel calm. This is an optional step as it is purely for the psychological benefits of prepping your mind to calmly handle the exam when it eventually arrives.
TRUST ME IF YOU CAN FOLLOW ALL THE STEP LISTED ABOVE YOU WON’T BE A FAILURE.
